Euphonia Novelty Orchestra is opgericht in 1979. De totale bezetting is gebaseerd op die van de orkesten uit het eerste kwart van de vorige eeuw. Deze, meestal "zwarte", orkesten speelden zogenaamde "novelty songs", jazzsongs, evergreens en andere meezingers uit de Amerikaanse jazzhausse periode. De jazzstijl die tussen 1917 en 1930, bekend als de Roaring Twenties, het uitgaansleven zodanig beheerste, dat vele songs nu nog bekend zijn en nog steeds worden gespeeld. En dat na 80 jaar! Europa maakte voor het eerste kennis met deze muziek door een tournee van de blanke band "Original Dixieland Jazz Band" in 1917 in Londen. De eerste hot-jazz platenopnames dateren ook van deze tijd.

Euphonia Novelty Orchestra was founded in the mid seventies of the previous century. The band’s normal strength of 11 was based on orchestras from the first quarter of the previous century. These orchestras played so-called "novelty songs", vintage jazz songs, evergreens and other singalong songs from the American jazz era, also known as the Roaring Twenties. This particular style of jazz, which was played between 1917 and 1930, dominated the life of entertainment to such an extent that many songs, even now – after some 80 years! – are still well-known and are often played.

Muzikale verantwoording / Musical Justification

Vanaf het begin is er door Euphonia Novelty Orchestra naar gestreefd deze unieke jazzstijl vast te leggen in arrangementen, collectieven en solo’s. Met een uiterste nauwgezetheid worden daarvoor 78-toeren-platen muzikaal ontrafeld en vervolgens omgezet in arrangementen voor ieder instrument.Wat naar eigen smaak wordt ingebracht, moet de muzikale toets van de oude tijdgeest kunnen doorstaan. De gespeelde nummers hebben daardoor een bijzondere authenticiteit verkregen, ook al omdat geen enkel deel van de oorspronkelijke omvang van de jazzstukken wordt overgeslagen.

From the beginning, Euphonia Novelty Orchestra has aspired to preserve this unique style of jazz in its arrangements and collective and solistic performances. With painstaking accuracy 78-rpm records are muscially dissected, to be subsequently transposed into the arrangements for each instrument. Elements introduced to our own liking must stand the musical test of criticism of the old times. Therefore, the items on our program are imbued with a singular authenticity, also because not a single part of the original jazz songs is left out.

De oorspronkelijke stijl / The original style

Het is bij de latere variant van deze oorspronkelijke jazz, ook wel Dixieland genoemd, de gewoonte het refrein als thema te nemen voor een vaste reeks van intro-soli-finale en veelal in een sneller tempo. Geheel anders is het bij een optreden van Euphonia Novelty Orchestra.De klankkleur wordt hier bepaald door de consequente vertolking van alle authentieke delen van de gespeelde nummers: refrain, verse, interlude, chorus, coda, bridge, intermission, vamp, theme, final, etc. En dat in de oorspronkelijke tempo’s: 2-Beat, 4-Beat, Boston-Waltz, Slow-Waltz, Ragtime, One-step, enz. En niet te vergeten: alle bijbehorende zangpartijen, stijlvast en "soul-loaded" vertolkt door onze leadsinger Frank Douglas.

It is customary for the later version of this original style of jazz,also known as Dixieland, to use the refrain as the theme for a fixed sequence: intro-soli-finale, usually in an adapted tempo. This is not what we do in our performance. In our performance the tone is determined by the consistent interpretation of all authentic parts of the songs played: refrain, verse, interlude, chorus, bridge, intermission, vamp, theme, finale, etc. And in the original tempi: Boston-Waltz, Slow-Waltz, Ragtime, Mazurka. And, last but not least: the vocal parts, interpreted in a soal-loaded way and true to style by our lead-singer Frank Douglas.

Optreden / Performance

Het is de muziek uit de gouden jaren van "hitsige" jazz als amusementsmuziek. Gespeeld door de top van toen: Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Johnny Dodds, Fletcher Henderson, John Hyman, Jelly Roll Morton, Joe King Oliver, Harry Reeser, Paul Whiteman en vele anderen. Met trein en bus trokken deze door de Verenigde Staten, spelend in hotels, nachtclubs, veaudeville theaters en (wat later) radiostudio’s. Eén ding hadden al deze orkesten gemeen: een optreden werd gekenmerkt door een nadrukkelijke bedoelde chique. Niet in het minst door de kleding, de collectieve presentatie en de keuze van het repertoire. Geheel in die stijl voltrekt zich ook een optreden van de leden van de vereniging Euphonia Novelty Orchestra. Er wordt zittend gespeeld, achter tijdgebonden, intiem verlichte "stagestands". Uiteraard in smoking met vest, “vadermoordenaar” en soms slobkousen.

This is the music from the golden years of jazz as entertainment music. Played by top musicians of the olden days: Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Johnny & Baby Dodds, Fletcher Henderson, John Hyman, Jelly Roll Morton, Joe King Oliver, Harry Reeser and many others. They travelled through the United States by train and bus, playing in hotels, nightclubs, veaudeville theatres and regional or national radio studios. All these orchestras had one thing in common: their performance was characterised by an emphatic smartness. Not in the least by the cloathing, the collective presentation and the choice of the repertoire. The  members of our club Euphonia Novelty Orchestra present their show in exactly that style. They play while sitting down, behind specially adapted and scarcely lit "stage-stands". Naturally, in sober black tuxedos, complete with vests and stand-up collars.

Kennisoverdracht / Transfer of knowledge

Omdat zowel de muziek als ook de vertolkers museale trekjes beginnen te vertonen, worden vele nummers van tevoren geïntroduceerd met een bronbeschrijving. Het gaat immers om authentieke dans- en luistermuziek van zo'n 75 jaar geleden.Nostalgie is een menselijke eigenschap. Daarom wordt een optreden van Euphonia Novelty Orchestra nog steeds gewaardeerd om de springlevende, hoorbare conservering van deze unieke jazzstijl. Daarenboven mag meegezongen worden na ons verzoek ...

Because both the interpreters and the music are beginning to show museological traits, many songs are introduced beforehand by giving a description of the source. After all, we’re talking authentic dance and listening music of some 70-80 years ago. Nostalgia is a human quality. That is why a performance of  Euphonia Novelty Orchestra is still appreciated for its more than lively, audible preservation of a unique style of jazz.
